MEDBIQUITOUS RELEASES AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD TO IMPROVE PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS DATA EXCHANGE - Standard Speeds Credentialing in Times of Crisis and When Patient Safety is at Stake

Baltimore, Maryland, USA, July 7, 2008.  Verifying the professional credentials of doctors and other health care workers is a critical process in ensuring consumers receive high quality health care.  A new MedBiquitous/American National Standard will make it easier for regulatory bodies and health care institutions  to catch fraudulent practitioners and recognize those claiming the highest levels of qualifications." The sources of professional healthcare credentials are fragmented," said Peter Greene, M.D., Executive Director of MedBiquitous and Chief Medical Information Officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine. "Education records, board certification, and disciplinary actions are maintained by different entities and reside in different databases.  The Healthcare Professional Profile will allow organizations – particularly those with primary source data – to create connections and work better together."

The new standard will also help improve the medical response in cases of mass casualties due to terrorism or natural disaster.

"Hurricane Katrina demonstrated how current credentialing practices delayed deployment of health workers from outside the disaster area," said Michael Zarski, JD, chair of the Professional Profile Working Group and Director of the American Osteopathic Association Department of Information and Technology. "This standard allows us to keep credentials data up-to-date and get the information out to those who need it more quickly, particularly in times of crisis."

The American Osteopathic Association and the American Board of Medical Specialties use the Healthcare Professional Profile as part of the federal Emergency Systems for Advanced Registration of Volunteer Health Professionals program (ESAR-VHP). This program allows for efficient credentialing of health professionals and their deployment in emergencies. The American Board of Medical Specialties also uses the Healthcare Professional Profile to collect data from its member boards.

The Healthcare Professional Profile, ANSI/MEDBIQ PP.10.1-2008, provides a standard XML format for profile data on healthcare professionals, making it easier to exchange and compile profile data across organizations. This in turn allows for faster credentialing of professionals and faster availability of accurate data to the public. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), American College of Radiology (ACR), American College of Surgeons (ACS), American Medical Association (AMA), American Osteopathic Association (AOA), Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), CECity, the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), and TMA Resources all contributed to the development of the standard.

The Healthcare Professional Profile provides a common format for the following types of data:

  • Training
  • Certification
  • Licensure
  • Disciplinary actions
  • Academic appointments
  • Occupation
  • Personal information
  • Professional memberships
