MedBiquitous Developing Standards for Describing Healthcare Professional Profile and Learning Content

Standards to improve credentials verification and access to healthcare education

Baltimore, Maryland, September 6, 2006. – MedBiquitous is pleased to announce the submission of its Healthcare Professional Profile and Healthcare Learning Object Metadata to the MedBiquitous Standards Committee for development as American National Standards.

MedBiquitous was established in 2001 by Johns Hopkins and leading medical societies. Peter Greene, M.D., Associate Dean for Emerging Technologies at Johns Hopkins Medicine, serves as Executive Director of MedBiquitious.   Accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), MedBiquitous‚Äô goal is to advance healthcare education through technology standards that promote professional competence, collaboration, and better patient care.  Working with members in professional medical and healthcare societies, academia, government and industry, MedBiquitous is creating a technology blueprint for healthcare education.

‚ÄúHealthcare education and regulation are incredibly fragmented,‚Äù said Greene.  ‚ÄúYou‚Äôve got to have standards to coordinate all of boards, regulators, and educators involved in supporting healthcare professionals and protecting the public.‚Äù

The Healthcare Professional Profile provides a common format for exchanging clinician contact, education, training, certification, license, and membership information. The profile has been used by the American Board of Medical Specialties to collect certification data from its member boards and to provide verification of physician specialty certification through authorized credentialing systems using its Direct Connect Select‚Ñ¢ service.

“The specifications make it easier for data owners to exchange data with their trusted partners and verify important credentials,” said Todd Tischendorf, Professional Profile Working Group Chair.

Healthcare Learning Object Metadata, or Healthcare LOM, is based on the IEEE Learning Object Metadata standard and provides a standard way of describing healthcare educational resources and activities, allowing learners and educators to find the right content when they need it. The specification provides a consistent way of describing many important characteristics of an activity, including continuing education credits, target audience, and medical taxonomy keywords. Healthcare LOM has been used by the Association of American Medical Colleges in shaping the data collected in its MedEdPORTAL inventory of teaching resources. The Healthcare LOM specification is included in the SCORM for Healthcare interoperability model for e-learning, which is being used by the Collaborative Healthcare Training Group, a multi-agency training development group established by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Many organizations are making their educational content and activities accessible through the Internet,” said Morgan Bantly, Learning Objects Working Group Chair. “Healthcare LOM will help those groups catalogue their content and partner with others to make finding the right content easier for learners.”

Both the Professional Profile Working Group and the Learning Objects Working Group are seeking participants for pilot implementations of the specifications.
