Open data standards have been central to successful sharing of open educational objects. OpenLabyrinth has long supported the ANSI Medbiq Virtual Patient standard in its case structure. But sharing now revolves more around complementary functionality and APIs rather than portable objects.

OLab4 has moved beyond virtual patients as a powerful education research platform. It has been rewritten using a microservices approach, with an extensible, modular architecture around the core functionality.

It still supports xAPI and LTI data-interchange, external widgets, such as H5P, while still remaining compatible with older formats to support case exchange. The platform continues to be based on both open-standards data and open-source code. The use of Docker containers and an ORM approach to database schema management will make maintenance much easier for organizations.
