Embedding Competency and Curriculum Mapping through the Implementation of the MedBiquitous Curriculum Inventory Standard in TUSK an Enterprise Educational System

Background: The Tufts University Sciences Knowledgebase, TUSK is an enterprise educational system providing course, content and knowledge management systems and a method to publish competencies. We needed to implement the Medbiquitous Curriculum Inventory Standard and create tools that would be useful to Deans, faculty and students. Summary of work We identified TUSK missing elements regarding the implementation of the CI standard which ranged from simple things such as adding program definition to the more complex tools to link competencies across the curriculum. Fortunately, the TUSK schedule organizes a great deal of the CI elements. Implementation complexity was increased through working with TUSK partner schools and assuring the tool met multiple work flows. An open source visualization tool supplemented an excel view of the competencies. These provide a variety of ways for curriculum planners, faculty and students to manipulate the data and use it to view pathways through the curriculum. The creation of the XML file which meets the AAMC business rules is a challenge. Summary of results The visualization tool simplified a complex array of information and pathways through and across the levels. The system was designed so that central administrators would link from school to national competencies and down to course level competencies while course directors would link from course to sessions. Versioning was added to associate competencies with publications dates.
