I can give you the MedBiquitous perspective on your question. We had quite a bit of discussion about this topic within our working group. The Curriculum Inventory specification is designed so that each event or learning session can be designated with a primary instructional method and additional non-primary instructional methods. Most of the people in the working group indicated that they usually tag events with one instructional method only (and that getting faculty to do that can be difficult). Some participants indicated that they would want the capability to tag with multiple instructional methods, but they were in the minority. My understanding is that the AAMC will be expecting events to be tagged with a primary instructional method when they launch their curriculum inventory portal. I've copied a mailing list we have through MedBiquitous that is focused on issues related to implementation of the Curriculum Inventory Specification. The folks on that list may have additional ideas or feedback for you to consider. If you are interested in subscribing to the Curriculum Inventory Implementers list, please go to the following web page and fill out the form. http://medbiq.org/mailman/listinfo/ciimplementer_medbiq.org Or you can email me. Anyone is welcome to join the list provided they have a valid interest (ie we screen out spammers). For those of you wondering what the heck Brian is talking about, I would recommend looking at the following links: Curriculum Inventory Working Group Charter (provides some context as to why we created a spec for curriculum data) Implementing the New Curriculum Inventory Standard: Will our current curricular systems meet the needs? We are currently using the MedBiquitous Curriculum Inventory Standardized Instructional and Assessment Methods and Resources to define each of the instructional methodologies that make up our curriculum. We have mapped our curriculum to the primary instructional method used in each learning session and are considering having a more granular view of our curriculum which further subdivides each session. We can reorganize our database to allow multiple instructional methods to be tagged for each session and generate a report showing this subdivision in an infinitely divisible way. What I am curious about is how do you standardize this subdivision at your institution and how do you assure that the process accurately reflects what is occurring in each session. I believe this process is an important part of the continuous quality assurance process and would like it to be a meaningful exercise. Specific to my question would you have your faculty... * Simply label each session using multiple tags * Subdivide each segment of each learning session by minute of instruction and categorize each according to instructional methodology * Label the primary instructional methodology and clarify subdivisions as part of another field perhaps as part of the session overview * Use some other approach Thank you, Brian Brian Dzwonek, EdD Associate Dean for Medical Education Marshall University Joan C. Our initial approach was to use the Medbiquitous term for each of our TLMs though we found that some of them did not align with our terminology. For example, our faculty did not want to use the term "Independent Learning" as they were concerned that students would infer that they were on their own. Instead we are using "Guided Learning." For some of these IMs we are also differentiating by adding a subtype to the resources field. For example, an IM of "Guided Learning" with a resource of "Distance Learning - Asynchronous can use a variety of delivery methods, including Articulate modules, CBLs, Online presentations, readings, etc. As for sessions that utilize a variety of IM we are trying to enter those separately, however there is some resistance to being so granular in our SIS system. For example, every week we have a 3 hour session where the students learn a variety of things via simulated patients, presentations and discussions. We are going to enter these items in "chunks" of 30 minutes to 3 hours and are not going to get down to the minutes. This is a work in progress for us and I'd be happy to hear how other schools are approaching this! Thanks, Victoria Cannon From: Dzwonek, Brian R.
